Confidence in Action: Women’s Self-Defense at Nichols College

On Tuesday evening, the Susan West Engelkemeyer Institute for Women’s Leadership (IWL) at Nichols College hosted a self-defense seminar designed to equip students with practical skills, heightened awareness, and the confidence to navigate everyday situations more safely. The event brought together students in an engaging, hands-on environment where learning was both empowering and approachable.

At its core, self-defense extends far beyond physical techniques. It is rooted in preparation, situational awareness, and the ability to respond with clarity and confidence. Throughout the seminar, participants were introduced to accessible strategies for recognizing potentially unsafe situations and responding effectively. By emphasizing that these skills can be developed over time regardless of prior experience, the program reinforced an important message: confidence is built through practice, education, and intentional growth.

The interactive nature of the session allowed students to actively engage with the material, creating a supportive space to ask questions, practice techniques, and build comfort with new skills. This approach reflects IWL’s broader mission of fostering confidence and leadership development through experiential learning opportunities.

Programs like this highlight IWL’s commitment to empowering students not only as individuals, but as emerging leaders. Self-defense training becomes more than just a safety resource; it serves as a meaningful extension of leadership development. By building confidence in their ability to assess and respond to challenges, students strengthen the same qualities that define effective leadership: resilience, self-assurance, and decisiveness.

As student Ellie Daley shared, the experience was both impactful and enjoyable: “It gives me a little more peace of mind, while having some fun and learning new things!”

Through initiatives like this, IWL continues to create spaces where students can grow, gain confidence, and develop the skills needed to lead with purpose both on campus and beyond.
