Dunn Marketing Shares Career Journeys and Leadership Lessons

The Nichols College Institute for Women’s Leadership recently welcomed Laura Dunn, Founder, CEO and Chief Brand Strategist of Dunn Marketing, and Marci Seney, Vice President of Client Services and a Nichols College Class of 2005 alumna, for an engaging presentation and lunch discussion centered on career development, leadership, and the value of embracing opportunities.

While the session provided students with insight into the marketing industry and the experience of working for a women-led agency, the most impactful takeaway was the advice Laura and Marci offered about navigating life after college. Through honest reflections on their own careers, both speakers emphasized that professional success is rarely the result of a perfectly mapped-out plan. Instead, it is often built through a series of experiences, relationships, challenges, and opportunities that shape a person’s path over time.

One of the recurring themes throughout the discussion was that students should not feel pressured to have every detail of their future figured out before graduation. Both Laura and Marci shared stories from their own journeys that demonstrated how careers can evolve in unexpected ways. The positions they hold today are the result of years of learning, adapting, taking calculated risks, and recognizing opportunities when they appeared. Their experiences reinforced the idea that uncertainty is not a sign of failure but rather a natural part of professional growth.

For students, Marci’s message carried a particularly personal significance. As a Nichols College graduate, she was able to speak directly to the anxieties and questions many current students face. Looking back on her own college experience, she reassured students that very few people follow a perfectly straight path from graduation to their dream career. Her story demonstrated how professional development happens over time and how success is often built one opportunity, one relationship, and one lesson at a time.

Laura and Marci also stressed the importance of remaining open-minded throughout one’s career. They encouraged students to view every experience as an opportunity to learn, even if it was not originally part of their plan. Whether stepping into a new role, accepting additional responsibilities, or pursuing an unexpected opportunity, growth often occurs when individuals are willing to challenge themselves and move beyond their comfort zones.

The conversation also highlighted the importance of confidence and self-advocacy, particularly for women entering the workforce. Laura and Marci emphasized that students should not wait until they feel completely prepared before pursuing opportunities. Instead, they encouraged attendees to trust their abilities, seek out challenges, and have confidence in the value they bring to a team or organization. Their advice served as a reminder that growth and confidence often develop through action rather than waiting for the “perfect” moment.

The luncheon served as a valuable reminder for the Institute for Women’s Leadership community that careers are not defined by a single decision or a perfectly executed plan. Instead, they are built through persistence, continuous learning, and the courage to take the next step, even when the destination is not yet fully clear. For many students in attendance, that message was both empowering and reassuring as they continue to shape their own futures.
